Did I mention that I Love sweet peas? No?
I freekin LOVE sweet peas!! Ohhhhhh they are... well, they really are very sweet aren't they...
'Tis the start of sweet pea availability season and I tells ya, there are some beauties at the flower markets. (Note: Getting up at ridiculous-o'clock in winter is only tolerable in order to nab some exquisite florals like these).
Sweet peas are generally available from May to September through florists, if you don't see them in store during this period, your local florist will usually be able to order them in for you.
Try growing your own!
Although it is now a bit late in the year to plant sweet peas, it is the perfect time of year to be enjoying the flowers! Here are some tips for next season's planting;
Sweet peas thrive in full sun and rich soil and the old tradition is to sow your seeds on St Patrick's Day March 17th - however in warmer areas they can be sown up until the end of April.
Plant them somewhere they can climb, a long pot at the borrom of some trellis or a lattice fence in a sunny position is perfect.
Fertilise with fish emulsion twice a month month and watch out for caterpillers, they love sweet peas too. Neem Oil is a good alternative to ward them offf whilst avoiding nasty sprays or chemicals in your garden.
With a bit of TLC, a splash of rain and a dab of sunshine, you should be picking luscious, voluptuos sweet peas in spring!
With love and sweet peas,
Kate
